Using links to help internet marketing efforts

The usage of inbound links for websites has been known as one of the most significant factors in search engine placing and optimization. The main reason behind this is the assumption that if a website has obtained a large number of links pointing in, it most likely is because it is a very popular site and people want to make it know to others. Part of this assumption is true and works for search engine optimization; however, link acquisition needs to be properly planned as it could lead to removal from the search engine index if it was to be considered as spam.

Besides the benefit for search engine placing having links pointing to your website from other related sites is a great way to brand your business. In fact many website owners are willing to put your link on their website as long as you reciprocate with a link to their website. In this process there are few things to consider:

How to link to other websites
If you are planning to have a considerable number of links they should not be placed on the home page of your website. It is better and more efficient to have a link on the footer of your pages to an area where the links are placed by categories. The best way to link is to include more information about the other website (company name, description of goods or services) and to avoid simply placing the url on the page. This will be more useful for people browsing your links area and minimizes the chances of being consider a link-farm which can be penalized by the engines.

How to determine which links to accept
Since the purpose of a link area is to increase popularity it is better to accept and request links from same-industry or industry-related companies. This can be somewhat difficult for competition reasons so it is good to make a list of parameters that can determine which links you will be willing to place on your website which benefit a person browsing the page and will not compromise your business in any way.

How long to link for
Normally you want to keep links for as long as possible. However, it is a good idea to check that they companies are linking back to you twice a year.

How many links to have
There are different opinions on this point which refer to how important or relevant the mutually-linked pages are. Although it is certain that an inbound link from a highly popular website (strong link) is more beneficial to you than one from a website which has just been launched, it is good to have a mix of them and always try to increase the amount while keeping a balance.

In specific cases you may not want to have a links area on your website, however, for most sites it is good to have one. It is never too late to begin working the popularity of your website and you can start by using inbound links.
