Facebook Timeline For Brand Pages
As you probably are aware, trends in social media are in a constant state of flux – always changing as the medium further develops. This morning, Facebook announced a change that will affect all Pages by March 30, 2012, where Page layouts will be reconfigured to the new Timeline view.
Why did they do this?
To create a more unified look and feel for the site and to improve the branding capabilities for businesses and organizations.
How long do we have to update it?
You have until March 31 to redesign your page and publish it. On March 31, all pages will automatically switch to the new format
Are there any benefits to this new layout?
Yes. Some benefits include:
- A 851×351 pixel cover photo to convey a brand message
- Pinned tabs – allowing you to “pin” a post on top of all other posts for up to 7 days
- Highlights – allowing you to specify particular posts as being especially important, taking up twice the width of normal posts
- Direct Messages – pages can now accept direct messages from users – a great improvement in terms of customer service and privacy
Any downsides to the new layout?
The one drawback is that the new design deters “like-gates” – which is basically defining a customized landing page app to appear to those fans who have not already liked the page. Custom apps can still be used though, and are available on the right beneath the cover photo.
